You may have heard that simply having an alarm system in place will deter criminal activity, and this is true to an extent. Criminals want to get in and out of a home without being caught, and their chances of being caught in the act are increased greatly when an alarm system is present. However, it is not enough to simply have the system installed. It also needs to be actively monitored, and there are a few good reasons for this.
Notifying the Authorities
There are two main purposes that alarm system monitoring serves, and one of these purposes is to notify authorities as soon as there is a break in. The alarm monitoring system typically keeps a watchful eye on the system around the clock, including on weekends and holidays. Any time the system is breached, the monitoring agency typically will first attempt to reach the homeowner. This is because some breaches are actually the homeowner setting the system off on their own. If the homeowner cannot be reached or if the homeowner states that he or she is not home, the monitoring company will then contact the law enforcement officials about a potential crime in progress. This entire process happens in a matter of seconds.
Notifying the Homeowner
The home alarm system will notify the homeowner of a potential break in in a number of ways. First, a monitored system will emit a loud sound when the system is breached, and this sound will alert anyone in or near the home of a potential break-in. In addition, the monitoring company will contact the homeowner directly. Some monitoring services also have a text alert system that can send notices to different mobile devices so that you can further be attempted to be contacted. When a system is simply installed but not actively monitored, you will not be able to receive these alerts and phone calls. In fact, the system will not even make noise if someone tries to break in. A system that is not actively monitored essentially is a deterrent and nothing more.
Monitoring your home alarm system is an essential component to keeping your home secure. It simply is not enough to have an alarm system installed without turning on the monitoring service as well. There is a small monthly fee associated with home alarm monitoring, but this is the final component of the system that is designed to fully keep you safe and protect your home. If you have a system that is not actively monitored or if you are not happy with your monitoring service, now may be a great time to look for a new monitoring service.
